Have you ever come across a band and instantly thought "Wow, I have to hear EVERYTHING these guys (or gals) have done!"? Well for me that was Toronto band Fucked Up. I started collecting their records with their sophomore LP. After being so impressed with the band, both their music and the interesting design of their releases, I knew I'd be hooked.
Something about the feel of certain records just make you crave more of them, especially knowing that there's so many available. This was especially the case for a group with as large and specialized catalogue as Fucked Up. As you can see from the photo, I have collected some of these multiple pressings, and am always on the hunt for more. I, like many others, find a small joy in the collection of records themselves. It gives you a feeling of surprise and pleasure coming across a release you didn't have, especially with such a narrow focus as one band. Right now my collection sits at thirty-five 7-inch singles, four full length LPs, six 12-inch singles, two split 12-inchs, two compilation albums, and two live albums (I also managed to find and order another fairly priced 7-inch while writing this. Oops).
This group is always one of the things I look for going into new stores. Almost compulsively, I'll always grab any release that I know I lack. This behaviour doesn't have any real explanation, and although slightly embarrassing, I believe there are certainly worse habits.
Also of note: Frontman of Fucked Up, Damian Abraham, is also a known record-collector and currently has his own podcast about it, Turned Out A Punk, which rules.
